ABOUT THE CHOIR

The Unicorn Singers is a choir of around thirty based around the town of Crickhowell in Powys, Wales, which explores exciting repertoires from the Medieval, Renaissance, and early Baroque periods.

We were founded around thirty years ago by our conductor, Stephen Marshall, with the aim of bringing alive music which, at that time, was seldom heard.

We regularly perform works by Bach, Buxtehude, Tallis, Palestrina, Schütz Monteverdi and Purcell. We have performed at a variety of venues, including St David's Cathedral, Brecon Cathedral, Llandaff Cathedral, Tintern Abbey, and Dore Abbey.

Our president is Clifford Bartlett.

OUR DIRECTOR

Stephen Marshall, the choir's director, has been involved with music from an early age.

He began composing at 10 years old and studied at Trinity College London whilst still at school. He went on to read music at Liverpool University and composition at the Royal Academy of Music.

On graduating, he began his teaching career at the King’s School, Worcester, and then Giggleswick School in Yorkshire. He was Head of Music at King Henry VIII School in Abergavenny from 1981 until 2010, and continues to teach in local schools in the area. He regularly involves his pupils in the Choir’s performances.

Stephen is an accomplished keyboard player and a dynamic person who makes seemingly impossible things happen. He is passionate about the forgotten Baroque repertoire as well as new compositions – the choir has given several ‘First Performances in Wales’ under his leadership.

He is organist and choir master at St Catwg's church, Llangattock, and also conducts the Crickhowell Choral Society.
