In Dulci Jubilo

Our Lady and St. Michael's Catholic Church, Abergavenny

Sunday 6th December at 8:00pm

The Unicorn Singers' Christmas season gets off to a glittering start this weekend with their Advent concert in Our Lady and St Michael's Roman Catholic church at 8pm on Sunday 6th December.

This year's "In Dulci Jubilo" programme features an enchanting sequence of carols old and new, with joyous arrangements of popular carols by Michael Praetorius heard alongside modern miniatures by Warlock, Sir John Tavener and Richard Rodney Bennett.

"Michael Praetorius left us some remarkable settings of such favourites as In dulci jubilo", explains conductor Steve Marshall, "which have all the essential sparkle and mystery of the season. Many more recent composers have gone out of their way to capture that same sense of awe and wonder in their settings of medieval texts and it is such beautiful miniatures that I believe will make the perfect complement to the older works, even though they were written some 400 years apart."

Members of the choir are looking forward to singing again in the splendid acoustic of the Catholic church, which is known to add a certain magic to the sound.

"We shall also be singing some marvellous pieces by Schütz", says Steve, "that are a real joy to sing, especially their many peels of 'Alleluia', which can rival Handel's Messiah for their zing factor! Enough, I think, to get us all in the Christmas spirit!"

Unicorn will be singing again at St Catwg’s Church, Llangattock on 23rd December at 7.30pm.
