Palm Sunday. Buxtehude, Membra Jesu Nostri
Brecon Cathedral, Brecon
Sunday 20th March at 3:30pm
Buxtehude's astonishing work takes the form of seven meditations on the injuries inflicted on Christ at the Crucifixion. Considered the composer’s greatest work, this is certainly one of the most important pieces of choral music written before the age of Bach and Handel. Beautiful arias are interlaced with subtle choruses to the accompaniment of both violins and viols. Heard here as it was originally intended, as part of a Holy Week service, this should prove a highly memorable experience and the perfect focus for the lead up to Easter.
