The Unicorn Singers liturgical performance gives us another opportunity to celebrate the "most excellent" Monteverdi's 450th anniversary.
Published posthumously in 1650 the messe a 4 offers us a distillation of the composers mature style. Its thematic economy, using only simple motives, together with the merging of both older contrapuntal and newer harmonic styles results in great expressive freedom at every turn.
The two communion motets are miniature masterpieces again using simple ideas but packing a great emotional punch.
